Herbal steaming for women is not a new trend. On the contrary, it is a traditional practice of women's health care that has been passed down from generation to generation across many cultures for centuries. This is the focus of the upcoming documentary series Steam, featuring American advocate of herbal steaming for women Keli Garza.
Two years ago, part of the filming took place in the Czech Republic. The film crew visited Steamy®.cz and documented the work of Monika Valová, who has long been dedicated to reviving the tradition of herbal steaming for women and promoting its safe integration into modern women's healthcare.
The filmmakers were particularly interested in how she succeeded in bringing this tradition into modern medicine, how herbal steaming is used in Czech maternity hospitals, and how healthcare professionals perceive its benefits for women.
The official trailer brings together the voices of women from different parts of the world as they share their experiences with herbal steaming. They speak about warmth, care, support, feminine strength, and knowledge that has been part of women's lives for generations.
One of the women in the film says:
"In our village, it's part of the culture. Young women and older women all do it. And they should."
Another reminds us that women's health issues should not simply be accepted as something women are expected to endure.
"People often assume that because you have a uterus, pain is normal. But that's a misconception."
The trailer raises an important question: how much traditional knowledge have we lost with the rise of science and modern medicine, and how much of it could we rediscover?
The trailer features the experiences of midwives, practitioners, and women themselves. They speak about the benefits of warmth, improved circulation, and the traditional use of herbal steaming throughout different stages of a woman's life.
The Czech perspective also highlights the use of herbal steaming during childbirth. The trailer suggests that this is not about creating a new practice, but about reviving a tradition that was once well known in this region and is now gradually finding its way back into maternity care.
A central theme of the documentary is the belief that traditional women's healing practices are part of our cultural heritage and deserve to be preserved.
One of the women featured in the trailer says:
"These healing practices are just as important as any other form of world heritage. They need to be protected and preserved for our children."
This idea runs throughout the documentary. It is not only about herbal steaming itself, but about preserving knowledge that has been developed through centuries of women's experience and continues to benefit women today.
We are truly delighted that the Steamy®.cz team had the opportunity to become part of this international project and that the experiences from the Czech Republic will be featured alongside the stories of women from many other countries.
We believe the documentary Steam will help open a broader conversation about herbal steaming, connect women's experiences across cultures, and remind us that some valuable traditions are worth rediscovering.
